Newcastle-via-Sydney outfit Purplene have announced a handful of reunion shows to celebrate the re-issuing of their 2004 self-titled album.
The band will be playing their first Newcastle shows in over 14 years this May – taking the stage at The Hamilton Station Hotel on Saturday, May 19. Then playing an All-Ages In-store at ABICUS the next afternoon.
Newcastle band The Instant will also be reuniting for the show at The Hamilton Station Hotel. With Run Squirrel rounding out the bill.
Adelaide-based DIY label Hobbledehoy Records are re-issuing Purplene’s most iconic album on vinyl for the first time. Released in 2004, the album was recorded in the US by iconic engineer Steve Albini (who worked with the likes of PJ Harvey and Nirvana).
Hobbledehoy, upon announcement, said that Purplene were “responsible for one of the most breathtaking and inventive Australian indie albums of the last two decades.”
Tim from ABICUS remembers Purplene just as fondly. Taking to the business’s Facebook page, he felt compelled to let people know about this forgotten band:
“Seeing Purplene live for the first time late 90’s Newcastle felt like a truly significant discovery… who?, how? WTF!! Are these guys local? They’re like the long-lost lovechild of Superchunck and Pavement but with an unmistakably Novocastrian tendency.”
“How this album didn’t explode on a global scale will forever defy explanation, it will, however, go down as a vital & true Australian indie classic”
Purplene’s 2004 self-titled album is available now from Hobbledehoy Records
